What Can't Go In a Skip? Full UK List (2026)

2 May 2026 6 min read

Why Skips Have Restrictions At All

Skip companies aren't being awkward — the law genuinely stops them taking certain items. Mixed hazardous and non-hazardous waste can't legally go to the same landfill site, and items like fridges and TVs require gas extraction or WEEE-licensed handling. Putting any of these in a skip can void the hire contract and leave you with a £100+ surcharge or the skip refused at the tip.

The Full List — What You Can't Put In a Skip

  • Mattresses — landfill tax means most firms charge £15–£25 each as an extra
  • Fridges, freezers and air-con units — contain refrigerant gases (F-gas regulations)
  • TVs, monitors and computer screens — classed as WEEE (electrical waste)
  • Tyres — banned from landfill since 2006
  • Paint, solvents and chemicals — hazardous waste
  • Asbestos in any form — licensed contractors only
  • Plasterboard — must be separated (releases hydrogen sulphide gas in landfill)
  • Batteries (car, lithium, lead-acid) — fire risk and hazardous
  • Gas bottles and aerosols — explosion risk
  • Medical waste, syringes, clinical waste
  • Japanese knotweed and other invasive plants
  • Liquids of any kind, including oils

What to Do With Each Item Instead

  • Mattresses — book a same-day collection (around £25–£40 each) or take to your local Essex Recycling Centre yourself
  • Fridges & freezers — most Essex councils collect for £25–£35, or we'll take it the same day for around £40
  • TVs and electricals — free at any Recycling Centre under WEEE rules
  • Tyres — most garages take them back for £3–£5 each
  • Paint — Community RePaint schemes accept unopened tins; harden tins with sand or sawdust to dispose of as general waste
  • Asbestos — never DIY. Licensed Essex asbestos contractors only
  • Plasterboard — we collect plasterboard separately as part of our builders waste service

Why a 'Man and Van' Often Beats a Skip

If your project includes any of the items above (and most home renovations do), a skip ends up costing more once you add separate collections for the restricted items. A licensed waste removal team can take everything in one go — restricted items included — because we segregate the load at our transfer station, not in your driveway.

  • No permit needed (we don't leave anything on the road)
  • Mixed loads handled — wood, metal, plasterboard, mattresses, fridges all in one collection
  • Same-day or next-day across all Essex postcodes
  • Fixed price from photos — no surcharges for 'restricted' items
