Why Garden Clearances Are Priced Differently

A garden clearance isn't just a volume job. Two gardens with the same amount of waste can take very different amounts of time, and time is what you're really paying for once the truck space is agreed.

We quote from photos, then confirm on arrival. Wide side access to a driveway in Rayleigh is a quick job. A rear garden in a Leigh-on-Sea terrace where every barrow load goes through the kitchen is not — and it's fairer to say that upfront than to add it on afterwards.

• Access — driveway, side gate width, steps, or carrying through the house
• Distance from the furthest point of the garden to where we can park
• Whether material needs cutting down first, or is already piled and ready
• Mixed materials — soil and rubble weigh far more than the same volume of hedge trimmings
• Fixtures — sheds, decking, fence panels, greenhouses, old ponds and concrete bases

Green Waste Has to Be Kept Separate

Clean green waste — grass, hedge cuttings, branches, leaves, brambles, turf — can be composted or processed into soil improver. That's cheaper to process and far better environmentally than landfill, where rotting vegetation generates methane.

The moment green waste is mixed with soil, rubble, plastic sheeting, treated timber or general rubbish, it stops being clean green waste and has to be handled as a mixed load at higher cost. That's why our crews separate on site as they load, and why we ask what's in the pile before quoting. If you can keep your green waste in its own heap away from the rubble and old shed timber, you help your own price.

The Essex Garden Calendar

Demand is genuinely seasonal, and booking with the season instead of against it gets you a better slot.

• Late February to May — the big rush. Gardens are cut back, properties go on the market, tenancies turn over
• June to August — smaller top-up jobs, decking and patio work, holiday-let turnarounds on the coast
• September to November — the second peak: hedge cutting, leaf fall, sheds and greenhouses cleared before winter
• December to February — quietest weeks, easiest slots, and the best time for a big overgrown clearance while everything is dormant and visible

Overgrown and Abandoned Gardens

Some of our most satisfying Essex jobs are gardens nobody has touched for years — probate properties, long-term empty homes, or a rental where the last tenant let brambles take the whole plot. These need cutting down before anything can be carried out, so we treat them as a two-stage job: strip it back, then clear it.

Under head-height growth we regularly find fly-tipped rubbish, old paving, buried concrete, asbestos-cement shed panels and, occasionally, wildlife. We work slowly through the first metre for that reason. If we find suspected asbestos, we stop and advise on specialist removal rather than loading it.

Sheds, Decking, Fencing and Greenhouses

We dismantle as well as remove. Sheds come down panel by panel, felt and timber separated, glass handled carefully, and the base broken out if you want the ground back. Decking, old fence panels and posts, greenhouse frames and hot tubs are all routine for us.

One note on timber: pressure-treated and painted wood can't go into clean wood recycling, so it's routed separately. It doesn't change what you pay — we've already accounted for it — but it's the reason we ask what the shed was treated with.

Japanese Knotweed: What We Won't Pretend

Japanese knotweed is classed as controlled waste, and it is an offence to cause it to spread in the wild. Cutting it and moving it in an ordinary tipper is exactly how it spreads — a fragment of rhizome is enough to start a new stand.

We are not a knotweed treatment contractor and we won't pretend otherwise. If we identify it, we'll tell you, avoid disturbing it, clear the rest of the garden around it, and point you to a specialist who can carry out a proper treatment plan with the right disposal route. That's the honest answer, and it protects you if you ever sell the property.
